"Jonah and the Whale" contemporary figurative painting

"Jonah and the Whale" is another painting on a textured canvas made from recycled studio rags and gesso.  

I am trying to created from my imagination and focus on the dream-like aspects of unrefined art.  I want avoid ruining this pure art as I did in the past. I continue to draw and sketch from still life to develop my eye, but I have learned from painful experience that these exercises should be done separately and shouldn't be done on the unrefined dream-art canvases. The rhythm and intent and mode are completely different, at least as I have experienced it.
