"Circus Bear" contemporary figurative painting

I have come to realize that I can take my flawed art and rework it until I am satisfied or at least I can abandon it.  Here are some things I am trying to remember as I paint:

  • Avoid leaving figures or areas until last.  Work on the entire composition.  See the entire compostion.
  • Decide all colors first before rendering.  If you do add new colors, add them in varying intensities throughout the composition.
  • Work on all areas of the compostion at once. never focus on details while ignoring the composition.  That leads to diagrams, comic book illustrations.
  • Know how to cover any color to rework areas.
  • Know your pigments and grays and how you made every hue.
  • Don't correct brush strokes.
  • Don't worry about details.
